New world

from Collage by The Party Accident

/

lyrics

Loading the supplies, food and drink and guns
Saying our goodbyes to those left at home
Settlers and their families on the upper decks
Soldiers and the animals down below

All the cargo is made fast,
Ready to set sail at last
Ropes are cast, anchors raised and sails unfurled
Winds that make the ships go quick
Storms that make landlubbers sick
On our voyage to discover a new world

Seven weeks without a rest
Relationships put to the test
Till lookouts in the crows nest
Shout land ahoy

In our little boats we head off to the shore
Setting up our camp, get the fires alight
Meeting strange people with foreign tongues
Hoping they don't slay us in the night

Chopping trees to build a town
Claiming land for the crown
Killing local wildlife for us to eat
Laws are made and scribed by hand
Claiming all the native land
Trading with the people that we meet

Though we started out with the best intent
As the years go by, the vision starts to fade
Chopped down all the trees and eaten all the birds
Reneged on our promises freely made
Local men as slaves soon leads to revolt
But better weapons keep the natives down
Life in the new world isn't what we planned
There's not enough food left to feed the town

So now the new world that we find
Is like the one we left behind
Injustice and corruption everywhere
Our failure cannot be denied
We send explorers far and wide
In hope that they will find a new world there

All the cargo is made fast,
Ready to set sail at last
Fresh ideals and new plans are unfurled
Will we heed the lessons learned
From this land we have now spurned
On our voyage to locate a new new world
